The use of ionising radiation in industrial and medical applications is a well established and essential part of the industrial, medical and veterinary world, however, protection is required for the safety of its operators and patients alike.
The radiation shielding we undertake involves the use of lead (lead shielding) or other high density material to shield against neutrons and ionising radiation within areas such as Fluoroscopy. This involves constructing walls, floors, service penetrations and doors with lead lining. Windows and static or movable viewing screens get fitted with a special lead oxide glass. Additional requirements, such as fire and acoustic ratings, can be included. We are also able to supply individual components such as radiation shielded doors and windows for installation by third parties.
European EMC Products also offer a total, consolidated service relating to the shielding and monitoring requirements associated with a variety of facilities such as Linear Accelerator (Linac) Bunkers and Proton Therapy rooms. This work includes undertaking conceptual studies, reviewing health physics issues, as well as installation and commissioning.
Cyclotron Radiation Shielding
Cyclotron radiation is electromagnetic radiation emitted by accelerating charged particles deflected by a magnetic field, and are used as a source of high-energy beams for medical applications and nuclear physics experiments.
Cyclotrons can be used in particle therapy to treat cancer. Ion beams from cyclotrons can be used, as in proton therapy, to penetrate the body and kill tumours and minimizing damage to healthy tissue along their path. The beams can also be used to bombard other atoms to produce short-lived positron-emitting isotopes suitable for PET imaging.
Cyclotrons, the energy produced by the cyclotron, need to be contained within the treatment rooms or experimental areas. With that in mind EEP can design, install and test suitable ionising and electromagnetic shielding to protect adjacent areas.
